[ARCHIVED] Council Seeks Help in Reviewing Las Tunas Designs

The City Council will host a study session on Dec. 1 to review three proposed streetscape design concepts for Las Tunas Drive. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Live Oak Park Community Center. Community feedback is welcome.

Mayor Tom Chavez recognized that community involvement has enabled the city to move ahead with the revitalization of downtown. At the same time, he hopes residents will maintain their high level of involvement. “We truly hope citizens will join us to learn more about the proposed streetscape designs,” he said. “And, most importantly, to provide their thoughts.”

All designs aim to upgrade an aging infrastructure, improve pedestrian safety and attract new businesses along Las Tunas. The study session will recap the corridor’s history, how planned streetscape designs evolved over time, and how they fit into the city’s plans and goals for its downtown area.

The Council approved the initial streetscape design concept for Las Tunas in 2012. This first iteration reduced travel lanes to one lane in each direction and introduced back-in angled parking. Following feedback from residents and local businesses, staff presented a revised concept in June 2015 that provides two westbound lanes, one eastbound lane and traditional parallel parking.

A third concept was recently designed, which retains two travel lanes in each direction and focuses more on street beautification. This concept, along with the other two, will be presented at the Dec. 1 study session. The Council will select a final design in January 2016.

Live Oak Park Community Center is located at 10144 Bogue St. Translation will be available in Mandarin.
