The Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Microsoft, has put together a comprehensive virtual learning environment for youth and adults. All workshops are free and begin in mid May and run through June. Workshop topics cover reading comprehension, game coding, virtual museum tours, business building, and professional development.

Microsoft Store and the Tony award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen are partnering to provide a free, virtual one-hour workshop for students ages thirteen and older who want to authentically connect to themselves, friends, family, and their communities during this time of social distancing. Dear Evan Hansen has received critical acclaim and has inspired conversation about mental health and the perils of living in a society hyperconnected by social media, which can often feel lonely. Workshop participants will define what it means to make authentic connections and explore ways to create those connections. Students choose how they want to connect and will use Microsoft tools to research and create an actionable plan for reaching out.
YOUTH CLASS - THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY’S "HALL OF FOSSILS" TOUR - AGES 8+

Travel millions of years to the past without leaving your home. In this workshop, students ages 8+ are transported to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History right from their web browser using 360-degree interactive imagery. By the end of the workshop students will have explored the Smithsonian’s famous "Hall of Fossils" in 360-degrees virtually , learned about natural history in the Jurassic age, and completed a fun virtual discovery hunt throughout the museum.
ADULT CLASS - KEY STEPS TO STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS

In this free virtual two-hour workshop, you will learn the basic steps and skills to start your own business. You will brainstorm potential business ideas, create an outline for your business plan, and consider how to market, manufacture, deliver, and finance your product or service. You will leave the workshop with a PowerPoint presentation that includes your business plan, a polished pitch for your business idea, and resources and defined goals to get you closer to launching your own business.

In this virtual two-hour workshop series, students eight and older learn how to turn their passions into an entrepreneurial business idea. Students get guidance on how to create a business plan and a polished pitch ready to share with others. By the end of the two day workshop, students will have learned what makes a great product or service idea, completed a simple business plan, and learned key presentation skills to be able to pitch their business idea.

In this virtual two-hour workshop series, students eight and older use block-based coding to create a video game with MakeCode Arcade. Students learn fundamental game and coding concepts like sprites, variables, and coordinates, and use their new skills to create and customize a playable game. By the end of the two-day workshop, students will have learned and used key game design and coding concepts, coded a playable game, published their game via a URL so they can continue to play and develop it after the camp.

This virtual workshop shows you how no-cost tools in Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 can make your business more accessible, for both your employees and customers. By the end of the workshop, you will have learned how to create an inclusive culture and hiring process, how to build accessible materials, and what ongoing accessibility resources and tools are available.
In this free, one-hour virtual workshop, students eight and older will have fun learning and being inspired by Minecraft, computer science and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Using the power of code and AI, students will learn with the Minecraft 2019 Hour of Code lesson to program the Agent to prevent forest fires and regrow a forest.
Join us for this free, one-hour virtual workshop to take part in the global Hour of Code movement. Using the power of code, students aged 8 and up will explore aquatic worlds and uncover hidden treasure with the 2018 Minecraft Voyage Aquatic tutorial.
VIRTUAL MINECRAFT BUILD CHALLENGE
