Temple City to Host 7th Annual Relay for Life
Make strides in raising cancer awareness at this Oct. 27 community event.
TEMPLE CITY, CA (Oct. 5, 2018)—Put on your walking shoes and take part in Temple City’s seventh annual Relay for Life to support cancer awareness and the brave individuals fighting or affected by the disease.
Held locally at Temple City Park on Saturday, Oct. 27, the American Cancer Society’s trademark all-ages fundraising event brings together communities in pursuit of a cancer-free world. Since 2011, the Temple City edition has raised close to $350,000 for cancer research and support services.
The daylong event will begin at 9:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony featuring speeches by cancer survivors and community members including Mayor William Man and Capt. David Flores of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Thirty-six teams and more than 130 participants will walk around Temple City Park in solidarity with and to honor cancer survivors and caregivers, living and passed.
Relay participants will also enjoy entertainment from live bands and performers and various activities across the event site, including a costume parade at 2:30 p.m. and the bra lap at 4 p.m. At 7 p.m., approximately 300 lanterns will be lit and placed on the track during the event’s commemorative luminaria ceremony. Closing remarks at 9 p.m., meanwhile, will provide a recap of the day’s fundraising efforts and reiterate the importance of contributing for a cure.
“The relay is personal for me, as I am a cancer survivor,” said event lead Kim Wunner. “And just two years ago, my mother went through the battle, so we now walk together to fight back to find a cure for this disease.”
Event organizers hope to raise $50,000, which will benefit cancer research, support groups, wigs for patients and much more. Those who wish to donate or register in Temple City’s Relay for Life can do so online at www.relayforlife.org/templecityca.
“The Temple City Relay, like most other relays, is a community event, and we raise a lot of money without a lot of big sponsors,” Wunner added.
In addition to individual donors, the community partners whose support makes this year’s event possible include the City of Temple City; Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs; Healthcare Partners; Pinnacle Dental Care of Dr. Tai Mao; Arcadia Radiology Group; Moss Company; The Hat; Kelley, Jiggins & Associates; Temple City Kiwanis; Temple City Unified School District and TempleCityPhotos.com.
